Why Chose an Architect?
What’s the difference between an architect and an architectural designer?
It’s a distinction that’s often not widely understood, but it’s an important one when choosing who to work with.
An architect is registered with the Architects Registration Board (ARB) and can be a member of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). This means they’ve completed at least seven years of rigorous training and professional experience, covering everything from design and technical delivery to legal, contractual and health & safety responsibilities.
An architectural designer is not a protected title. It can cover a wide range of experience and backgrounds, but it doesn’t require the same formal qualifications, training or professional accountability.

So why does it matter?
With an architect you have the reassurance of professional standards, a code of conduct, and the expertise to see your project safely from initial sketch through to completion.
It’s worth knowing the difference – and asking the question – before you begin.
